When it comes to food, there seems to be a lot of rules. Pair this with that or that with this. I have found that if you break those rules, you might just discover some beautifully unique pairs.
It’s been a little while since I’ve reviewed anything. I suppose I’ve just got picky on what I like to share. You may remember my “Spice of Life” review I did for Fresh Jax last summer. There, I talked about how Fresh Jax is making unique rubs and spices that are easy to use and really spice up your dishes.
I have been using Fresh Jax exclusively for the past year and I have not been disappointed. I was further impressed when I tried one of their newest creations, the “Sunrise Cowgirl’s Coffee Rub.”
Yeah, I know. Kind of a girly name for a guy who spends as much time in the Rocky Mountains battling the elements as I do but, I gave her a shot and she did not disappoint.

I am a simple guy with extremely simple taste. When I want to fire up the grill and cook a meal at home, I keep it simple. But, simple doesn’t have to bore the taste buds. That’s where Fresh Jax comes in!
Like millions of people world wide, I enjoy a regular cup of coffee. There’s just something about the smell of coffee that perks you up and gets you ready to start the day!
However, I had only really thought of coffee as a hot, delicious beverage to drink in the mornings and sometimes afternoon. I had never thought about combining a coffee taste with my favorite protein source, steak. That was, until, I met Fresh Jax’s Sunrise Cowgirl’s Coffee Rub.
I had two beautiful ribeye steaks picked out from my local butcher. I fired up the oven and enjoyed an afternoon preparing them for what would be the best dinner I would have in quite some time.
I rolled and tenderized the steaks in the Coffee Rub and the smell of coffee, organic black pepper and smoked Cherrywood sea salt foreshadowed to me that this steak was going to be different than anything I have tried in the past.
After searing the steaks, in a hot skillet, my work was mostly done. I decided to cook the steaks slowly in the oven at about 200 degrees. Cooking them slowly seems to keep the meat tender and lock in the juices. An hour of slow cooking filled the house with a subtle coffee and steak aroma, something I never had experienced before but quite enjoyed.
The steaks were sweet and savory with each bite being highlighted by the Sunrise Coffee Rub. I don’t think I truly understood what “bold flavor” meant until I tried this rub. With each bite I was further impressed. This unique experience is hard to describe, I must admit. But, I think everybody owes to themselves to at least try this combination, especially if you like coffee.

The simplicity and deliciousness of Fresh Jax rubs and spices are perfect for me and those who prefer not to have an elaborate spice cabinet full of spices you only use a couple of times a year.
With Father’s Day right around the corner, I think that a set of Fresh Jax rubs and spices would be a slam dunk of a good gift. Summer is in full swing and you know there will be plenty of opportunities to get outside and grill.
